University student sent a powerful message to his religious classmates when he used an on-campus lip sync battle to come out as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community - performing on stage to Taylor Swift's song 'You Need To Calm Down'.

But it wasn't only Arthur's teachers and fellow students who took notice - Taylor Swift did, too.
The ultimate social media lurker, Swift retweeted an article detailing Arthur's experience - saying it made her "SO emotional."

"I can't tell you how honoured I am that my song has been even a small part of your journey," she added.

"You did the brave thing and stood up for your truth."

A student at George Fox University in Portland, Oregon, Arthur's performance made a particularly strong statement given his university was founded by Quakers, a traditionally religious group whose formal name is Religious Society of Friends.

It was,, a powerful expression of resilience in the face of an institution which has developed a reputation for "institutional oppression".

When Arthur realised that Swift had watched his performance, he understandably commenced freaking out.

“This woman. My Queen. My Icon. The woman who’s lyrics I have screamed at the top of my lungs. Who’s songs have walked me through the hardest time of my life," he tweeted.

"TAYLOR ALISON SWIFT. MOTHER OF MEREDITH, OLIVIA, AND BENJAMIN, KNOWS MY NAME. TWEETED ME. I CANNOT CALM DOWN!!!!!”

The student added: “HOW AM I EVER SUPPOSED TO DO MY HOMEWORK EVER AGAIN.”

Swift had a big night at yesterday's American Music Awards, being recognised as Artist of the Decade and taking home six awards - bringing her overall tally to a record-breaking 29.
