Migration to NT can fulfil your dream of becoming Australian citizen

If you are already in Australia, you can apply for permanent residency after six months of living in the Northern Territory and working full time in a nominated or closely related skilled occupation. The NT also has an agreement with the federal government that allows employers to sponsor workers with some concessions including limited English language requirements.

Securing Australian permanent residency is a dream of many who visit the country, but constant changes and reviews in the immigration policies may shatter hopes of some of these people.

However, these people could call the Northern Territory their home as it has relatively relaxed terms and conditions as compared with other Australian states and territories.

“The NT is very thinly populated and no doubt there are workers needed,” says Imran Lakhani of Vision Consultants.

According to Mr Lakhani people particularly international students who are already in Australia can settle in the NT and eventually secure Australian permanent residency and citizenship.

“It is easier for any international student who has studied in the NT to settle there, but those who have not studied in the Territory can still be eligible.”

However, there are certain terms and conditions that they should follow. Check out the information provided by the NT Government at the end.
The Northern Territory Designated Area Migration Agreement (NT DAMA) lets NT employers sponsor skilled and semi-skilled overseas workers in areas experiencing skills and labour shortages. DAMAs apply to a designated region.

If you are an eligible NT employer the NT DAMA lets you sponsor overseas workers. The NT DAMA provides employers with some concessions to the criteria for the mainstream Temporary Work (Skilled) Subclass 457 visa.

In some circumstances these concessions include:

  • access to some occupations that are not available under the standard Subclass 457 visa arrangements
  • limited concessions for English language requirements
  • limited concessions for salary levels.
