Singer Ricky Martin has taken to social media to celebrate the news that Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, only halfway through his term, would be resigning.

The news came after thousands of Puerto Ricans descended onto the streets of San Juan to demand Rosselló stand down from his position, citing resulting from Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Praising protestors for standing up "in peace" and "with no guns", Martin said the country's people were empowered to achieve "anything we want".

"We did it," he wrote in a caption on Instagram.
"Puerto Rico, we did it. And we did it in peace. With no guns, like Gandhi. We demanded respect and we were heard."

He continued: "Respect for our children, respect for our women, respect for the LGBT community, respect for our dead. This will never happen again. We won’t let anyone walk all over us again. We will be attentive, vigilant. There’s so much to do now. It is now we need to work more than ever.

"We succeeded today because we were united. For many decades Puerto Rico was divided. NOT ANY MORE."

For Martin, the fight for Rosselló's resignation was also personal, with leaked encrypted messages between Rosselló and his inner circle of aids and cabinet members revealing homophobic jokes and comments.

In one message, Puerto Rico's finance chief, Christian Sobrino, joked: "Nothing says patriarchal oppression like Ricky Martin."
He added: "Ricky Martin is such a male chauvinist that he f***s men because women don’t measure up. Pure patriarchy."

Still, Martin said that the people of Puerto Rico had successfully stood up against corruption in the government.

"We are an example," he wrote. "No more corruption, no more trash. WE’VE RESCUED OUR ISLAND."

He continued: "I want to thank the members of the press for keeping us informed. Thank you. Because of your outstanding job, the whole world listened.

"We’ve written a powerful page in history tonight."
