On a world press tour for his new film Hotel Mumbai, actor Armie Hammer has expressed reservations over signing on for the rumoured Call Me By Your Name sequel.
"The truth is, there have been really loose conversations about it, but at the end of the day - I’m sort of coming around to the idea that the first one was so special for everyone who made it, and so many people who watched it felt like it really touched them, or spoke to them.
"It felt like a really perfect storm of so many things, that if we do make a second one, I think we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment."
He added: "I haven’t had that conversation with them explicitly. But I mean, look. If we end up with an incredible script, and Timmy’s in, and Luca’s in, I’d be an asshole to say no.
"But at the same time, I’m like, that was such a special thing, why don’t we just leave that alone?"
Last year director Luca Guadagnino confirmed that work was underway on a follow-up film, to be set across the pond in the United States.
"I’m already conceiving the story with [author] André Aciman. It’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards, so almost in the 1990s," he told a reporter on the Oscars red carpet.
He continued: "It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone. You’re gonna see a lot of the East Coast of America… They’re gonna go around the world."
"I think it’s going to be a very relevant part of the story."
Hammer's co-star Timothee Chalamet previously confirmed his involvement in the second film, telling that he and Hammer "are 1000% in".
