TV powerhouse Ryan Murphy is set to join some of the all-time entertainment greats next week, when the writer, director and producer receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Murphy, who has been a longtime advocate for LGBTIQ+ rights, is responsible for popular TV shows including Glee, American Horror Story and Pose - which was recently renewed for a second season.
Murphy has been praised by members of the LGBTIQ+ community for putting his money where his mouth is; using his platform to support key community organisations and donating his profits from Pose to LGBTIQ+ charities.
“We’ve entered this area of television as advocacy,” the producer Variety earlier this year, “and I’ve seen the difference you can make in people’s lives by showing up for them, caring for them, and helping them in any way that you can.”
He continued, adding that producing Pose had woken him up to the ongoing challenges faced by members of the trans community.
“The thing that struck me in talking to so many of them, was how much they’ve struggled, how under attack they feel, how many of them find it difficult getting healthcare, and finding jobs."
“I just decided I need to do more than just making a show for this community. I want to reach out and help this community.”
He concluded: “My eyes have really been opened to the great work being done in a lot of these organisations, and these people are in the shadows and they need our support."
Murphy's star will be unveiled on December 4.
