Miley Cyrus has landed herself in hot water after sharing some poorly-worded thoughts on her sexuality.
Participating in an Instagram Live stream on Sunday, the singer and actor opened up to thousands of fans about her relationships and identity, quipping: “I always thought I had to be gay ’cause I just thought, like, all guys were evil, but it’s not true."
The 26-year-old, who has long been a vocal advocate for members of the LGBTIQ+ community, continued: “There are good people out there that just happen to have d***.
"I’ve only ever met one… and he’s on this Live.”
The star was referring to her new boyfriend, 22-year-old Australian singer Cody Simpson, who is currently in Australia completing the press circuit after winning last night's finale of The Masked Singer.
Cody, laughing throughout the video, responded to the comments by saying: “You don’t have to be gay.”
Cyrus went on to explain that, while she'd known Cody for a while, the pair didn't hit it off until recently.
“I was being a little too hardcore for him and his vibes and not allowing anyone in but now I am,” she said.
Members of the LGBTIQ+ community were quick to criticise the comments on social media, highlighting her inference that queer women only date women because they can't 'find the right man'.
"Don’t use the queer community as a stop-gap because you couldn’t find a boyfriend," one user tweeted.
"People aren’t queer because they 'gave up' on men. This is so insulting."
Cyrus soon , writing: “I was talking sh*t about sucky guys, but let me be clear, YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality."
She added: "You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTIQ+ community I am a part of.”
