A new film about Lizzie Borden, the woman behind one of America’s most infamous murder mysteries, will see Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny play lovers.

Directed by Craig William Macneill, the film Lizzie tells the story of Borden (played by Sevigny), who was accused but ultimately acquitted of gruesomely killing her wealthy father and stepmother with an axe in 1892 - with some believing Borden's sexuality might've been a motivating factor behind the attack.
Sevigny is also serving as Executive Producer on the film, with Kristen Stewart playing the role of Bridget Sullivan, the family's housemaid and Borden’s rumoured lover.

“So much has been said [about Borden],” Sevigny said in an interview with .
“But I think that we just really wanted to focus on how she went about finding [her freedom] and how important that was to her and what that meant to her. Whether it was through the relationship with [her maid] or ultimately killing her parents for money—because money equaled freedom then. It still does.
“I wanted it to be this rousing, smash-the-patriarchy piece, and then she gets everything she wants monetarily - the capitalist dream,” Sevigny adds.

“She gets the house on the hill, and Bridget leaves her. Her sister leaves her. She ends up alone.”

The film will be released later this year.
