Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are set to play lovers on screen

The film is based on a true story and set in the early 1800's.

Actors Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan are set to play lesbian lovers on screen in the upcoming film Ammonite, which tells the true story of paleontologist and fossil collector Mary Anning, who was born in 1799.

According to reports from , the film is set in the 1840s and follows an unlikely love story between Anning and a woman she meets in London.

Winslet has recently wrapped on Avatar 2, while Ronan is currently busy promoting Mary Queen of Scots.
The film, which starts production in March, is being produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (Widows and Lion) and directed by Francis Lee, whose film God’s Own Country was a critical success last year.

While many on social media appeared eager for the film, others expressed their desire for a lesbian romance film that wasn't defined by controversial age gaps or scandal.
