Actor Jack Lowden has shared his thoughts on playing the bisexual Lord Darnley in new period drama Mary Queen of Scots.
The film, which also stars Saoirse Ronan as Mary Stuart and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I, sees Darnley exploit his sexuality in a way that would've been uncommon in the 1500's.
"It’s a story about using one another and what everybody can get from each other," Lowden explained in an interview with .
"And what I loved was that he used his sexuality to get to become King Consort of Scotland. He obviously does that, there’s a scene where he does something that was sort of uncommon of the times or something like that, or that [Mary] doesn’t expect," he continued, referencing the film's oral sex scenes between Lord Darnley and Mary.
Speaking to Lowden continued: "That’s a sexual revelation purely for her. It’s not to perform her duty, it’s not to give anything back to anyone else or to the state. It’s for her. Then, of course, the very next morning he wakes up in bed with a man."
The Scottish actor said that he ‘loved’ exploring the sexuality of his character, saying it "added to the complexity of him and his sort of desire for everything".
