As queer women around the world count down the days until The L Word: Generation Q premieres on Showtime, a new review of the series has been published by , giving fans a fresh insight into what they can expect from the reboot.
The original series, which ran from 2004 until 2009, has achieved cult status in the LGBTIQ+ community - and excitement for the reboot ramped up once it was confirmed that Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey had signed on to reprise their respective roles as Bette Porter, Shane McCutcheon and Alice Pieszecki.
But what else will the new series bring to the table? More diversity? More trans and non-binary characters? A better handling of trans characters? (Let's not get started on Max Sweeney.)
Well, according to Caroline Framke's , the very the first scene of The L Word: Generation Q depicts “explicit, bloody period sex” - giving the impression that it won't be shying away from pushing the boundaries of mainstream TV.
The review also explains that writers behind new season have clearly made an effort to right past wrongs and “tries hard not to fail” new trans character, Micah.
However, Framke claims that trans characters “remain as frustratingly marginal on Generation Q as they were on The L Word.”
As , the program's original showrunner Ilene Chaiken is on board to executive-produce the series revival, with Marja-Lewis Ryan stepping on board as showrunner.
“Marja has brought her unique and contemporary vision to The L Word and blended it beautifully into the fabric of Ilene’s groundbreaking series," said Showtime President Gary Levine earlier this year.
"This revered show was both entertaining and impactful when it originally ran on Showtime, and we are confident that our new version will do that and more in 2019.”
