In a win for Black women in Hollywood and, well, movie-goers the world over, director Nia DaCosta has been tapped to direct the highly anticipated sequel to Captain Marvel.
Announced by , Marvel Studio's decision came after DaCosta recently directed the yet-to-be-released reboot of horror film Candyman, which was Executive Produced by Get Out's Jordan Peele.
In another indication that DaCosta's star is on the rise, her directorial debut, Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson, was released to critical acclaim in 2019 and currently has a .
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios held meetings with several candidates to helm Captain Marvel 2, but Nia DaCosta was a clear front-runner.
Colleagues in Hollywood were quick to congratulate the director on social media.
"Go get it!" Tweeted writer/director Gina Prince-Bythewood.
"So dope! Congrats," added the Oscar-winning writer/director of animated short film Hair Love, Matthew Cherry.
Writer Marc Bernardin also weighed in, reflecting on the significance of the role.
"It is one thing for Black filmmakers to get hired to make studio films with Black stars," he tweeted.
"That took long enough to make a reality. But this...this is the next step. This is huge. And it is welcome."
