This article contains low-key spoilers and speculation, so Elio/Oliver stans should proceed with caution.
Author André Aciman has mused on what the future holds for his beloved Call Me By Your Name characters Elio and Oliver, teasing the narrative for the book's sequel, Find Me, which is released next week.
Set 20 years on from Call Me By Your Name, Find Me sees the two former lovers reunite in Italy.
“They are clearly more mature now and know how fragile life can be,” Aciman said of the pair during an interview with .
“They have both had other relationships, [and] they know that they have to be careful and that a separation, should it occur again, would be devastating. Find Me gave me a sense of closure and finality."
He added: "Of course, life is full of surprises and no road is without bumps or wrong turns. But I think this ends the tale of Elio and Oliver.”
Aciman, who is straight, also explained that he wanted to avoid the elements of tragedy present in so many LGBTIQ+ centred stories.
“I was not interested in bullying or mockery or violence or AIDS,” he said. “I eliminated all these almost predictable villains in every gay story.”
He continued: "I didn't want it. People know they’re gay and nobody thinks twice about it, which is how it should be — and I have to say, in the world I live in, this is how it is.”
Meanwhile, diehard fans of Aciman's novel have expressed some cynicism on social media, anxious that Elio and Oliver might not get a happy ending.
