Belvoir St Theatre’s Barbara and the Camp Dogs scooped two trophies in the musicals category in the first half of the Helpmann Awards on Sunday night.

The Indigenous rock-opera won best female actor in a supporting role for Elaine Crombie and best original score for Ursula Yovich, Alana Valentine and Adam Ventoura.

The industry-only ceremony recognised the work of those behind the scenes including creatives, designers and technicians.
Monday night's more glitzy ceremony takes place at Melbourne's Art Centre for the first time.

The major acting and performing awards will be handed out including best play, musical, opera, dance and ballet.

It will be hosted by comedian Susie Youssef and SA State Theatre's Mitchell Butel and features performances by the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Bangarra Dance Theatre.
