From surprise adoption discoveries, finding birth parents and realising family heritage is incorrect - these were just some of the Facebook responses we received on our DNA shout out.
My father spent 81 years thinking he was an only child. A child born to a father who had been thought to be sterile so it was very exciting when at over the age of 40 my grandparents found they were pregnant. My grandparents are now dead and my father is into genealogy so did a DNA test to help find more people. Only he found more than he bargained on. Turns out his mum was having quite a long time affair with the well respected mayor and doctor and he was the result! Seems it was kept a secret and dad found out at the age of 81 that he had 5 siblings and loads of nieces and nephews. Still lots of questions unanswered... like how dads parents were able to afford to send him to the most exclusive school in Adelaide on a farmers wage. I think the real father may have had something to do with it... apparently all his boys went there too!! - Wendy Porter
Yes, after 38 years I found my biological father and he found out he had a 38yr old daughter. Originally found Aunt, Cousins and grandparents. - Leisa Thissen
Yes, what I thought was my grandfather is not! Fortunately him and my mother are not alive to see it, she would have been heartbroken she thought the world of her “father”! It also meant the Italian heritage, which I got from my “grandfather”, which I was very proud of was not in my bloodline 😳😬 - Anja Müller
I’ve found two older sisters. One a few weeks ago and another a few years ago. Has been the most wonderful thing ever. I’m the eldest of 5. My dad never knew and he would have been over the moon. Haven’t met my newest sister yet... - Amanda Quennell
Yes! A letter to my dad claiming to be from his daughter. I was thrilled! Mum was not happy Jan. Dad said it was a scam. Under protest I snipped Dad's hair and posted the prepaid DNA test...... woohoo we had a 40 year old sister who shook the skeletons out of the closet. Mum and Dad did not do enough to love and accept her but I love my big sister and am so happy she found us. - Karaina Quiggness
Yes I was raised as an only child and not knowing who my father was. Hubby brought me a DNA test for Christmas and the present just kept giving not only did I find my Father but a half sister and meeting cousins it turned out to be the best thing I ever done - Oma Ragas
My grandmother, grew up living with the stigma of being an illegitimate child in the 40's & 50's & last year at the age of 87 she finally found out who her father was through ancestry.com.
It was a very happy time for her to discover this info & discover half brothers & other family etc.
It also explained why her father was never involved in her life (he was married).
Was so great to see her get some resolution /closure even at her age, having lived with that missing link all her life, it still means so much to her. - Rebecca Lee
I did one and it told us the worst kept secret my grandmother on my fathers side was German- She always denied it! - Floss Rutter
Yes I have a twin, we were both sold via blackmarket adoption to our parents and found each other January this year. After 39 years. - Theodora Sullivan
I found my father 3 years ago after doing a DNA test. I discovered I have a fabulous younger brother. My mother had always told me my father was dead. After she died I decided to try the DNA route. Wish I had much sooner. - Niki Anoniem
