‘Don’t blame 5G on this:’ World reacts to Trump having COVID-19

On Friday afternoon, US President Donald Trump confirmed he and his wife Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19. Thirty-two days from an election, it is one of the biggest news stories of the year. Dateline collates a snapshot of the reactions so-far.

Hours after news broke that a close aide to the Trumps tested positive for the coronavirus, the president and the first lady confirmed their own positive results.

Just over a month before the US election, Trump will now have to isolate for two weeks.

This is a snapshot of some of the immediate reactions to the announcement:

Conspiracy theories involving 5G, Qanon and vaccinations have gone viral on social media platforms during the coronavirus epidemic.

Telecommunications network Telstra, who has been running a campaign to combat misinformation about 5G, were two steps ahead of COVID-19 sceptics on Twitter.
Despite Telstra’s best efforts, Qanon followers have jumped on the opportunity to fit the news into their conspiracy agenda. If you’re behind on what Qanon is all about, read SBS The Feed’s .
Comedians are relishing in the new opportunity for content. Here is a snapshot of the best Australian takes.
Comedians and epidemiologists are commenting on Trump’s inconsistent stance on masks during the pandemic. Over the past six months, Trump’s position on using a mask has shifted dramatically.

After the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first released guidance on wearing masks in early April, Trump announced the recommendation but said he “won’t be doing it personally.”

In July, he said mask-wearing was “patriotic”.

Then again in this week’s first US presidential debate, Trump mocked Biden his use of the mask.

"I put a mask on, you know when I think I need it,” he said.

"I don't wear masks like him. Every time you see him, he's got a mask," Mr. Trump said, adding that Biden "could be speaking 200 feet away" and then "shows up with the biggest mask I've ever seen."

An epidemiologist and health economist at the Federation of American Scientists, Eric Feigl-Ding, Tweeted about his son’s reaction.
A reporter from US news organisation Politico posted an excerpt from Trump’s address just hours before he tested positive.

In the address, Trump said that the end of the pandemic was in sight.
Trump faithful are rallying behind the president, including the Vice President himself Mike Pence.

World leaders and organisations are sending their well wishes to the President.
