Victoria records 11 new coronavirus cases as Melbourne's 14-day average continues to trend down

The rolling 14-day case average in Melbourne has remained below 10 for another day as health authorities monitor an outbreak at a butcher's shop.

Victoria has recorded 11 new coronavirus cases and no deaths as authorities keep a close eye on an outbreak at a Melbourne shopping centre. 

The rolling 14-day case average for Metropolitan Melbourne remains in single digits, sitting at 9.7 for the fortnight to 7 October, the Department of Health said on Thursday. The fortnightly average was 9.9 on Wednesday.

Melbourne also recorded 14 mystery cases in the two weeks between 22 September and 5 October, Thursday's figures show.

Regional Victoria's 14-day average is sitting at 0.4, up from 0.3 a day earlier.

This 14-day average needs to drop to five cases or less with no more than five mystery cases during the same period across the state for further restrictions to be eased on 19 October.

There are now 31 cases linked to a butcher shop at Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne's east, causing concern for health authorities.

Two people in Kilmore, located 60km north of Melbourne, have also tested positive to COVID-19 after a case connected to the outbreak dined at the suburb's Oddfellows Cafe.

Hundreds of people who visited the cafe between 30 September and 3 October are self-isolating.

Some 15,298 tests were conducted across Victoria on Wednesday, including about 500 in Kilmore.

The health department has been urging anyone who visited the cafe during the period to get tested even if they don't have symptoms.

Premier Daniel Andrews is urging any Victorian with symptoms - no matter how mild - to get tested.

"It's not the detection of a positive case that's the problem - that's exactly what we need,” he said on Thursday. "It's about the spread of this virus without us knowing - that's what can set us back."

There is also a new case in Mildura, though the premier noted it was a "very low positive" result.
