Victoria is set to ease coronavirus restrictions today as zero cases recorded on day five of snap lockdown

Victoria has posted low numbers of new coronavirus cases every day since the five-day lockdown was announced on Friday.

Victoria is set to emerge from its snap five-day lockdown at midnight tonight, with the state government reportedly signing off on plans to end the lockdown. 

It comes as the state recorded zero new coronavirus cases on Wednesday morning. 

The Herald Sun reported that senior ministers in the Andrews government met on Tuesday night and confirmed lockdown would end on time, barring any new mystery cases or a spike in the numbers reported on Wednesday morning.

So far Victoria has posted no more than three new coronavirus cases on any given day since the five-day lockdown was announced on Friday. Two new cases were reported on Tuesday. 

The state's cluster of cases linked to the Holiday Inn hotel, believed to all be of the more infectious UK variant of coronavirus, now stands at 19 cases.

There also has been high testing rates recorded across the state. Wednesday's data came from almost 40,000 tests processed in the last 24 hours. 

On Tuesday Mr Andrews said the state was "well placed" to end the lockdown on time, but refused to make any commitment or announcement until Wednesday. 

"This strategy is working, we are well placed to make changes tomorrow night," Mr Andrews told reporters on Tuesday.

"With a relatively small number of new cases...we are very well placed. But we won't know, we won't be able to make a final call on that until sometime tomorrow," he added. 

Mr Andrews said no decision had been made about whether Victoria would return to its previous restriction settings on Wednesday or whether some restrictions may remain in place. 

"We will get these rules off as quickly as we possibly can, as safely as we possibly can," he said.
