UN group calls for Assange to be freed

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention says the UK and Sweden must end their pursuit of Julian Assange.

THE UN'S DECISION IN FAVOUR OF JULIAN ASSANGE

* WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arbitrarily detained by Sweden and the UK since his arrest in London on December 7, 2010 as a result of legal action against him by both governments.

* UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention calls on Sweden and UK to:

- end Assange's deprivation of liberty

- respect his physical integrity and freedom of movement

- also afford him right to compensation

* Assange's deprivation of liberty included:

- detention in Wandsworth Prison in solitary confinement

- house arrest

- confinement at Ecuadorian embassy

* Lack of diligence by Swedish Prosecutor's Office in its investigations blamed for his lengthy loss of liberty

* his detention violates sections of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
