The Treasurer and Labor's treasury spokesman both have said they would not directly intervene in state land supply decisions.

Don't expect a coalition or Labor federal government to directly intervene in state land supply decisions in a bid to make housing more affordable.

Treasurer Scott Morrison wants to work with state governments on deregulating zoning and planning rules, both of which have been identified as handbrakes on the economy.

During a National Press Club debate with Mr Morrison on Friday, shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said he'd rather not intervene in state decisions but work together to eradicate blockages in housing supply.
