Mundine's legacy on the line in Green grudge fight

Forty-one-year-old Anthony Mundine is on the cusp of hanging up the gloves, but first he has a date with destiny when he faces his fiercest rival at Adelaide Oval on Friday.

From rugby league star to boxing world champion, Anthony Mundine has had a storied career.

In his own words: "They should write a movie about me. Call it 'Never before, never again'."

"What I've done has never been done. I dominated one sport and then went to another sport, the hardest sport in the world in boxing and become three time world champ."

And 'The Man', as he's known, has never been afraid to court controversy.

In 2001, he insisted America brought the September 11 attacks upon itself. More recently, he chose to opt out of standing for the national anthem in Friday night's bout.

"They're major issues you know. They have to be talked about. And if I don't talk about it who is going to talk about them? I'm just trying to change the system for the better, especially for my people, the Aboriginal people," Mundine said.

Now, in the twilight of his career, his legacy is on the line.

"Anthony hasn't been our best boxer, but he certainly has kept the sport out there in the limelight," leading boxing journalist Paul Upham said.

"If you cut away all the controversy, you've got to give a lot of respect to Anthony as one of Australia's best multi-sportsman when it comes to professional level."
Now Mundine faces his biggest foe, Danny Green, in a rematch that's been 10 years in the making.

When they last met, Mundine won the encounter in a shock decision, but this clash could be the defining fight of his career.

It'll likely be characterised by The Man's speed versus Green's punching power.

For Mundine, it's a worthy gambit: "It's gonna be what it's gonna be. Let's go."
