A 39-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman whose body was discovered by neighbours on the driveway of her south Sydney home.

Despite efforts by neighbours to revive Lynda Greenwood, also 39, she was pronounced dead at the unit complex on Cremona Road, Como, at about 12.30am on Tuesday with extensive wounds to her upper body.

Police will allege witnesses saw the 39-year-old male, who was in an "on-and-off-again relationship" with Ms Greenwood for about two years, leaving the property.
"I can confirm that the male and female were involved in an on-and-off-again relationship over the last two years," Sutherland Shire Police Area Commander Detective Superintendent Jason Box said.

The man was arrested at his home in Sylvania, in Sydney's south, just after 9.30am on Tuesday and taken to Sutherland Police Station where he was charged with murder (domestic violence).

He was refused bail and will appear before Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.
