Deadline looms to join child care system

Eligible families have until Saturday to switch to the government's new means and activity tested child care subsidy payment, Education Minister Dan Tehan says.

Eligible families have five days left to apply for the federal government's new child care subsidy and receive backdated payments.

Parents have until Saturday to complete an online assessment through their Centrelink account to apply for payments to be backdated from July 2.

Education Minister Dan Tehan said in a statement on Monday more than one million families had transferred to the new scheme.

Subsidies are now a means-tested and activity-tested payment, meaning both parents must be working, studying, volunteering or searching for work at least eight hours a fortnight to be eligible.

Under the changes, households with a total annual income under $186,958 will no longer face a cap on the amount of rebate paid to them each year.
