A strong police contingent has helped prevent any major clashes between rival groups at Cronulla.
Anti-racism protesters far outnumbered those who had gathered for an "anti-Halal" barbecue.
Right-wing activists associated with the Party for Freedom gathered around a pig on a spit at Cronulla for a "halal-free" barbecue after the NSW Supreme Court on Friday quashed plans for a rally and procession to mark the 2005 riots.
Australian and Southern Cross flags were hoisted above the crowd and heavily tattooed men wore cut-off flannelette shirts and singlets emblazoned with logos such as "love it or leave".
Others carried anti-Sharia law placards.
Attendees tucked into pulled-pork rolls and applied sunscreen to one another while chanting, "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi!
About 150 anti-racism activists later congregated at the beach about 500 metres away, segregated from the barbecue by riot police.
The protesters chanted slogans including, "Muslims are welcome, racists are not", "Racist scum off the beach, racist scum off the street" and "Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land".

Two protesters arrested
An anti-racism activist was bundled into a police van and whisked away after swearing at officers.
Police did not say why the man, who was wearing a bandanna, was searched and taken away.
A second protester from the same group was also arrested.
No arrests have been reported from the 100-odd right-wing activists gathered around the spit on a vast expanse of grass cordoned off by police.
