COVID-19 cases nearly double in the NT as Australia records another 17 virus deaths

Victoria reported six new COVID-19 deaths, while NSW and Queensland recorded five deaths each, and in the NT one person died from the virus.

Seventeen new COVID-19-related deaths were reported in Australia on Tuesday as the number of new infections in the Northern Territory almost doubled.

Victoria reported six COVID-19 deaths and another 7,043 virus infections.

Of the new cases, 5,452 were from rapid antigen tests (RATs) and 1,591 from PCR lab tests, the health department confirmed on Tuesday.


The number of Victorians in hospital with COVID-19 has dropped overnight by 24 to 203 patients.

This includes 29 people in intensive care with four on ventilation.

Active cases in the state stands at 43,595.

There is now 61.1 per cent of Victorian adults vaccinated with three doses.

NSW reports five new deaths

Meanwhile, NSW recorded 13,018 new COVID-19 cases and another five virus-related deaths among elderly people, including three men and two women.

Three of the dead were aged in their 70s, one was in their 80s and one was in their 90s.

"Older age is a significant risk factor for serious illness and death for COVID-19, particularly when combined with significant underlying health conditions," NSW Health said in a statement on Tuesday.


The total number of people in NSW, who have died since the pandemic began in 2020, now totals 1,953.

Health Department data gathered in the 24 hours to 4pm on Monday also showed there are 1,070 people in hospital, including 43 in intensive care.

About 55.8 per cent of people in the state have had three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Number of hospitalisations fall in Queensland

Queensland recorded five COVID-19 deaths and 4,397 new cases with hospitalisation falling to their lowest level in more than two months.

The new virus cases emerged after almost 7,600 tests across Queensland in the 24 hours to 6.30am on Tuesday.


There are 268 patients being treated for COVID-19 in hospital and another 20 in intensive care.

COVID-19 hospitalisations in Queensland are at their lowest since 5 January.

The latest figures show that 92.98 per cent of eligible Queenslanders have had one dose of a vaccine, while 91.06 per cent have had two.

Man in 60s dies in the NT

A Darwin man in his 60s had died with COVID-19 taking the Northern Territory's toll since the start of the pandemic to 30.

The man died in the Royal Darwin Hospital and had underlying health issues.

Officials have also reported another 437 new virus infections, a significant jump on the 235 revealed on Monday.

There are 45 people in hospital with COVID-19, including one person in intensive care.

The number of active cases in the NT stands at 3,015.

Number of new infections in ACT rises

The ACT has recorded an uptick in its daily number of COVID-19 cases, with hospitalisations also on the rise.

There were 658 new infections reported in the national capital on Tuesday, an increase of more than 100 compared to the previous day's total of 553.


Hospitalisations from the virus have also risen from 39 to 43 patients in the past 24 hours.

Of those, two are in intensive care and both are on a ventilator.

Vaccination rates have risen to 69.5 per cent of people 16 and over having received their booster shot.

No new deaths in Tasmania

Tasmania recorded 1,051 new coronavirus cases, an increase of 267 infections.

Tuesday's figure takes the island state's number of active cases to 5,607.

Fourteen people with the virus are in hospital, with six of those being treated for COVID-19 symptoms.

Four patients are in intensive care, a decrease of one from 24 hours earlier.

Tasmania has reported 13 virus deaths since reopening borders in mid-December and a total of 26 since the beginning of the pandemic.

WA case numbers continue to climb

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 in Western Australia continued to climb on Tuesday as the state recorded another 2,847 infections.

Forty-eight cases are now in hospital, although none are in intensive care.

The state has 14,458 active infections.

WA's strict level-two public health restrictions are expected to remain in place for the rest of the month ahead of an expected peak in Omicron cases.

The McGowan government has not imposed any work-from-home edicts and has urged people to continue working in offices if they can.

Many businesses have made their own decision to send workers home to reduce the risk of outbreaks sweeping through offices.

SA records more than 2,000 new cases

South Australia has reported another 2,089 COVID-19 infections, but no new deaths from the virus.

There are 97 people in hospital, including 13 in intensive care, where two people are on ventilators.


Active cases across SA stand at 19,030, SA Health said.

Tuesday's case numbers represented the first rise in SA after four days of falling infections.

The state's seven-day rolling average is 1949.
