Twenty-six-year-old Qutaiba Mehmood was hit with a four-foot metal spirit level that has left his left arm broken. The man who allegedly attacked him was later arrested by police but now has been granted bail with an AVO ( Apprehended Violence Order).

The Sydneysider was returning from shopping with his friend when he and his friends were allegedly attacked by a man in a car park.

“He just started shouting, why are you staring at me,” Qutaiba Mehmood told SBS Urdu.

“It was unreal; it has been around 48 hours from the incident, yet I am still shivering thinking about it."

Mr Mehmood claims that there seems to be a certain element in some areas where locals don't welcome people from South Asia.

"I don't know why he attacked me but living in Sydney for a while, I have witnessed such incidents where locals in some surburbs bully the new migrants or international students.

"They abuse and expect an apology in return; I guess this time, I didn't say sorry."

Highlights:

  • NSW Police arrested a 43-year-old man who was then charged with several offences
  • The man was granted bail by the Parramatta local court on 2 May.
  • Qutaiba Mehmood says this was the most un-Australian behaviour he has experienced here
