Singing and science can go together - this 12-year-old is proof

What makes a school kid love both science and singing? Is it passion, parents' love or the kid is simply good at both? SBS Urdu talked to young singer Hamza from Perth about his love for singing ghazals.

Everyone loves to sing songs but few are able to touch the notes that make sounds melodious and pleasing to ears.

Hailing from Perth and studying in Year 8, Hamza has been singing at local community functions and community events in Perth.

Before coming Australia, he even performed in local community events in Pakistan and sang in Television shows.

His vocal talent is appreciated especially for singing national songs and ghazals that even professional singers take time to sing. Hamza’s favourite singers are South Asian music legends including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hasan, Ghulam Ali Khan and Lata Mangeshkar.
For Hamza, who has been singing since he was eight, his passion for singing is his way of ‘expressing himself’.

“If you can genuinely sing melodiously, then it is very enjoyable to sing. This gives me immense satisfaction and self-confidence. Also, it is really good and satisfying to see other people enjoying what you are singing.”
"Singing is a way of expressing myself"
The singing talent who loves science the most as a subject says it was his music teacher that discovered his talent for singing.

“My music teacher first discovered my talent of singing. From there, I started singing to represent my school and on other occasions such as the Independence Day.

Rhythm, lyrics and music are the deciding factors to choose a song for practising. A true balance of these factors is always present in all the leading vocalists and singers.

I listen to the songs and try to note all these factors. I then practice the chosen song a few times to achieve the desired balance between these factors.”

But Hamza says his parents help him listening to his practice sessions and advising improvements.

His father, Mr Irfanuddin Khan says Hamza’s dedication with a high level of commitment and perseverance helped his singing talent.

“As parents, we did the best we could by providing him opportunities to decide his course in singing, sports and studies himself. He has balanced the studies, signing and sports himself."

"For him, his school studies are the top priority. He has recently been awarded best student certificate at school.

He is also a member of school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) program and he is one of those kids who work with universities in the STEM areas.”

And he is also good at sports.

"I have played quite a few games. I am a karate brown belt and was pursuing a black belt but had to leave that owing to our relocation to Australia. I like swimming and played golf as well. At school nowadays I am learning tennis." Hamza tells SBS Urdu with a smile.
