The Turnbull Government says it will not support a tax on sugary drinks, despite the insistence of Australia's leading medical body.

The Australian Medical Association has called for a ban on the advertising of such drinks and on junk food.

Australia has one of the highest rates of child obesity in the world, with about 27 per cent of Australian children between ages 5 and 17 statistically overweight or obese.

The Coalition insists it has already taking enough action to tackle obesity and will not make a deal to tax sugary beverages.

Labor is urging the Coalition to act but has stopped short of supporting a tax itself.
