A new batch of concrete bollards has appeared around Melbourne's CBD overnight, as part of the State Government's efforts to prevent the type of vehicle-based attacks seen in Bourke St and in London.

At least 140 more concrete bollards were placed at eight key pedestrian locations around the city, identified by Victoria Police according to pedestrian traffic, public events and significance to the city.

"Now, I know for many people these are not the most attractive, they are temporary, but they are there to ensure that we reduce the risk to communities," Police Minister Lisa Neville said.

"They're in areas that police have assessed we have the highest numbers of foot traffic and where we often might have public gatherings.

"They will ultimately be replaced by permanent structures that will look a bit better than these but this is all about making sure we reduce the risk of terrorist acts in our city."

The bollards have been installed at:

  • Queensbridge Square at Queensbridge Street, Southbank
  • Queensbridge Square at the intersection with Southbank Boulevard footpath
  • Boathouse Drive under Princes Bridge
  • Federation Square at the Swanston Street/Flinders Street intersection
  • Flinders Street Station at the Swanston Street/Flinders Street intersection
  • Southern Cross Station between Collins Street and Little Collins Street
  • Southern Cross Station at Bourke Street
  • Queen Victoria Market surrounds
