Once again, Melbourne has been declared the world's most liveable city, despite soaring housing costs and serious congestion challenges.

The Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Liveability Index ranks 140 cities each year on those topics, as well as stability, culture and environment.

Vienna once again came second and Vancouver third.

Adelaide was the next best Australian city finishing in fifth spot, followed by Perth at number seven.

But it’s bad news for Sydney which crashed out of the global top 10.

But you probably don’t want to set up home in Tripoli, Libya; Lagos, Nigeria or war torn Damascus in Syria, all of which are the least liveable cities

It was a record seventh time in a row in the top spot for Melbourne since 2011, which scored 97.5 out of a possible 100.

The top five remained unchanged from last year.

“EIU’s index was the most widely accepted city rankings system. This world record is an amazing feat that all Melburnians should be extremely proud of today. This accolade is an important selling point for Melbourne internationally: for businesses to invest or move here, for the best and brightest people to make Melbourne their home and for tourists to visit us.” City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said.
