Federal Senator Derryn Hinch has likened a Labor jobs advertisement to one promoting the American white-supremacists group, the Klu Klux Klan.

The video commits Labor to employing "Australians first" and features federal opposition leader Bill Shorten standing next to a group of mainly white people.

It's intended as a criticism of the coalition government's temporary work visas.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese has slammed the production, saying it never should have been made or shown.

Senator Hinch, leader of the Justice Party, told the A-B-C the thinking behind the advert is unclear.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has vowed to lift his game on diversity in Labor's advertising amid criticism from crossbench senator Derryn Hinch the latest offering could be an ad for the Ku Klux Klan.

"That ad was a kick in the face to every migrant who has come to Australia, chosen and worked hard to make Australia a better place and to make it their home." Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young supported the criticism.
