Victoria Police say extra police officers will be out in force in Melbourne over the Queen's birthday long weekend following an incident in the bayside suburb of Brighton on Monday night. (June 5)

29-year-old Yacqub Khayre was on parole when he shot one man, held a woman hostage and wounded three police officers before being shot dead by police.

Victorian Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Patton says there is nothing to suggest an increased threat in Victoria but agencies will remain alert.

Authorities are conducting a counter-terrorism operation in Melbourne's northern suburbs.

Victoria Police and their partners within the Joint Counter Terrorism team are carrying out the activity in the suburb of Ascot Vale, five kilometres north-west of the Melbourne C-B-D.

Witnesses are reporting seeing at least twenty police, including Special Operations Group officers, running around on a major road, and both federal and Victorian police searching rubbish bins.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says the raids are connected to the attack in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton earlier this week that left one man, Kai Hao, plus attacker Yacqub Khayre, dead.

An escort was also held hostage in the incident.

Mr Andews says it shows terrorism is not just a threat that Australians hear about from the other side of the world.
