Australia's newest Senator says citizenship is not a right, but a privilege.

Kenyan-born Independent Senator Lucy Gichuhi (g'chooh-ee) says she'll fight for education, the elderly and freedom of conscience.

She's delivered her maiden speech saying Australia's diversity is a strength and should be embraced.

Senator Gichuhi has told SBS News migrants need to realise citizenship is a privilege.
