Victoria Police are investigating incidents occurred on Elizabeth and Franklin streets in Melbourne’s CBD about 1.10am on 1 January.
It is believed a man approached a 36-year-old Melbourne man on the corner before a short argument broke out.
Police understand the offender then punched the victim once in the head causing him to fall onto the road.
The victim sustained life threatening injuries in the incident.
At this point, a group of people unrelated to the assault stopped and took the victim’s wallet which had fallen out of his hands, Police says.
They have then used the credit card for a number of purchases on Elizabeth Street and Reservoir.

Police have released two images of people they would like to speak to in relation to the incident.
The male in relation to the assault, is perceived to be Indian Sub-Continental appearance, in his early 20s, wearing a grey hooded jumper, white t-shirt and jeans.
The female in relation to theft and deception, is perceived to be Caucasian, in her mid to late teens, wearing a black jumper and black leggings.
The victim underwent surgery after a serious head injury and has since been released from hospital.
