A 26-year-old Brazilian national has appeared in Sydney Central Local Court today charged with allegedly importing four kilograms of cocaine.

Australian Border Force/ABF officers targeted the woman for a baggage examination on her arrival into Sydney International Airport from Chile yesterday.

During their examination, the officers observed that her empty suitcase was unusually heavy, with an x-ray revealing an inconsistency in its lining.

The officers deconstructed the suitcase, uncovering a white powder.

Initial testing of the substance was positive for cocaine.

Further testing will be done to confirm its exact weight and purity.

The woman was charged by the Australian Federal Police with importing a commercial quantity of border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.1 (1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.
