صدها هزار نفر از مردم مسرور پیاده، با اسکوتر و یا دوچرخه برای جشن سال نو به خیابان شانزه لیزه در پاریس رفتند - شهری که بخاطر اعتصابات گسترده تقریباً بدون حمل و نقل عمومی باقی مانده است.

به جز دو خط مترو در شهر مابقی تعطیل بودند و فقط چند اتوبوس شب در مراسم سال نو خدمات رسانی می کردند. این روز بیست و هفتمین روز اعتراض ها علیه برنامه های امانوئل مکرون برای پیاده کردن سیستم بازنشستگی بود.

اعتراضات موضوع مشترک عید سال نو بود. هزاران نفر در هنگ کنگ نیز کمی بعد از شمارش معکوس تا نیمه شب شعارهایی به طرفداری دموکراسی سردادند.

مقامات با استناد به نگرانی های امنیتی، نمایش آتش بازی های نیمه شب در شهر را لغو کردند.

پلیس برای نظارت بر وضعیت از بیش از ۱۰۰۰ دوربین امنیتی، هلیکوپتر و هواپیماهای بدون سرنشین استفاده کرد. اما جان میلر، معاون کمیسر اطلاعات و مبارزه با تروریسم NYPD، می گوید که میدان اسکوئر امن ترین مکان در زمین است.
