SBS Radio Korean Program conducted an interview with Deputy national chief medical officer Professor Paul Kelly about how COVID-19 will behave in the winter months.
The number of locally-transmitted coronavirus cases in Sydney has increased and there has been some speculation that when the weather gets colder, the virus will spread rapidly.
When asked whether it is highly possibly, Professor Kelly said the coronavirus spreads in a very similar way to influenza and it is more likely spread in the winter months.
“So yes, we are concerned about that, we are coming into winter in the southern hemisphere including Australia and we expect that influenza will also circulate as always does during that periods,” Professor Kelly said.
“So I guess one very strong suggestion from me to listeners is that they should look at as soon as possible when the influenza vaccination is available to get influenza vaccination.
“That won’t stop the coronavirus but it will stop you getting the other problem of the influenza during this period.”
