[Cinema Interview] 'Breathing underwater' depicts the underwater life of Korean women divers

The documentary film 'Breathing underwater' directed by a Korean documentary maker Hee Young Ko will premiere in Sydney. The documentary depicts the underwater life of haenyeo, the women divers of Jeju Island in South Korea which was filmed under the sea for 7 years.

A special screening of Breathing underwater, an in-depth documentary depicting the life of haenyeo, the women divers of Jeju Island in South Korea. Shot over seven years by director Ko Hee Young, the film follows a group of women who dive without oxygen tanks and rely on age-old breathing techniques to bring sea treasures to the surface.

This 1,500 year-old cultural practice was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.

In One Drop of Water presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from the 16^th of June, sets to showcase 70 artworks with the theme of ‘water’ featuring existing collections of the Gallery as 

 well as a range of contemporary artworks. The exhibition will explore how ‘water’ has been incorporated into Asian art works where the theme ‘water’ has been a ubiquitous adoption for centuries. The exhibition includes Treasure Island (2014) by Korean artist Sojung Jun and is a documentary media that artistically portrays the life of Korean haenyeo divers, in which Sojung reflects the divers’ years of dedication to the sea-faring job with confronting narratives between tradition and modernity.
