Meet Lark Lee, an immigrant, single mum of 8-year-old girl and an actress who started her career in her 30s. Then she made herself a director, writer and editor and her web drama, Paige, was sold to Chopso last month. The Brisbane based creator tells how she started her acting career, which took her further into the entertainment industry.
Young Lark was constantly told she was too ugly to become an actress, which stopped her dreaming until she became a mother in overseas. Motherhood was an experience that gave her the gut, she said. After applying for many modelling and acting jobs, Lark got her first role; A Hooker. Still, it was a literal dream-come-true moment. The film site was the place for her to be. Since then, she enrolled in acting classes and focused on acting.
After her well-known role in Harrow, she started to learn directing and scenario writing to present her own stories. The unpredictable nature of acting work has become an issue as well. Lark recollects difficult times, such as when she had no camera crew or any crew. Eventually, she introduced herself to the more extensive network and made a few successes on the web, such as, Stealth Murder and The Meeting. Last month was a milestone of her career as Paige has become her first web drama sold. The romantic comedy is about an Asian woman in her 30s trying to find love, inspired by her friends' and her own experience.
To the people who dream to work in the entertainment industry, Lark says, just do it. "You may need to do a part-time job or two to survive financially. But focus on the advice from those who know your work, not those who don't." She remembers the past when her life was under influence of ignorant criticism disguised as kindness. "I want to create stories that can give courage to the people frustrated by inconsiderate comments of others and to women who neglect their self-worth." So, they do not have to go through the same suffering as her.
