2019 APSA nominates 'Parasite' for the best feature film category

The multi award winning Korean black comedy-thriller 'Parasite' has been nominated for the best feature film at the upcoming 2019 Asia Pacific Screen Awards which will also celebrate 100 years of Korean cinema.


Only about a month is left until the 13th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, APSA. This year, the first Asia Pacific Screen Forum will also provide with 4-day networking opportunity before the grand night on the 21 Nov. APSA is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council and powered by Brisbane Marketing.

APSA represents the 70 countries and areas of Asia Pacific, which produce half the world’s film. APSA handpicked 37 films from 22 countries out of the 289 candidates, and again, only the best 12 movies or the artists will be the final winners.

Korean nominees are:

Palm d’Or and Sydney Film Festival winner, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite has been nominated for Best Feature Film. Since its Australian release last June, it has updated the top record of the ticket sales and number of cinemas for Korean movies in Australian cinema.

Dir. Bong has been nominated for Best Screenplay for Mother in 2009. Kim Hye-ja won Best Performance by an Actress by the movie.

Ji-hu Park is nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress Award for her outstanding work in Dir. Kim Bora’s House of Hummingbird. The independent movie has collected 28 international film awards so far, and the actress won Best Actress in an International Narrative Feature Film in 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. 

Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film is Underdog, directed by Lee Choon-baek and Oh Sung-yoon. The beautiful animation underwent four years of production to best express the beauty of Korean scenery and colours. Dir. Oh has won APSA animation prize in 2011 for Daisy: A Hen into the Wild.

Cinematographer KIM Hyunseok is nominated for WANG Xiaoshuai’ Chinese epic So Long, My Son (Di Jiu Tian Chang). Other awards Are such as, Best Feature Film, Best Youth Feature Film, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature Film, Achievement In Directing, Best Screenplay, Achievement In Cinematography, Best Performance By An Actress, Best Performance By An Actor, Cultural Diversity Award Under The Patronage Of UNESCO, FIAPF Award, Young Cinema Award.

Also, APSA’s newly launched Asia Pacific Screen Forum is a 4-day industry networking event with panel discussions. In particular, the Forum will officially open with a special celebration for 100 years of Korean Cinema. It will continue to introduce and explore the creative opportunities between the Australian and Korean screen industries, with the panels like Catherine Fitzgerald (The Love Song, first Korean and New Zealand co-production) and Zoe Sua Cho (the producer of House of Hummingbird). The discussion will be about official co-productions, location, PDV (post-production, digital and visual effects) and producer offsets and post, digital and visual effects attraction grants.

Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Adrian Schrinner said the Asia Pacific Screen Awards continues to grow in reputation as an event that brings together the many cultures and voices of the region.
