What’s the opportunity in film between Australia and Korea?

Australia Korea Young Professionals Association (AKYPA) and United Square (USQ) present a panel discussion with experts on the global impact of cinema and the opportunities in film between Australia and Korea.

with the topic of ‘Australian and Korean Film Production: A growing industry for innovation, collaboration and trade’ will be held in Melbourne on 6 September.

Panels include David Gim, Producer, Co-founder and Managing Director of Continuance Pictures, Russell Edwards, Film critic and Advisor to the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).

Mr KIM Sunghyo, Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Melbourne, will address the gathering.

Recently, renowned Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite received the Sydney Film Festival's main award after winning the prestigious Palme D'Or at Cannes. He is the first Korean filmmaker to do so in that festival's history.

In light of the recent publicity Korean cinema has got, can Australia harness the creative and technical skill and talent in Korea?

Panels will discuss some key challenges and areas of greatest potential for expansion and collaboration with Korea. Furthermore, speakers will throw light on their thoughts on how they think Australian audiences currently relate to films with Asian diaspora in specific how have Australians embraced or not embraced Korean film?

In recent years a weak dollar and generous tax incentives of up to 40% have helped turn Australia into a growing market for Australian-Asian co-productions.

Australian-Chinese co-productions in the decade to 2018 totaled $8.2 million, according to Screen Australia.

Australia has co-production treaty with South Korea as well but what has this meant for revenue generation with Korea? How has it helped carve a pathway for collaboration with Korea? Panels will discuss about this topic.
