Malcolm Turnbull needs to rule out once-and-for-all his government doing any further deals with One Nation, federal Labor leader Bill Shorten says.

Mr Shorten urged the prime minister to take heed of the Liberals' huge loss in the West Australian election, which he blamed partly on the party's refusal to put One Nation last on the ballot.

"He is is the national leader - I've ruled it out, he should do the same," he told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday.
