The government has announced that the country's economy has suffered the worst contraction since the Second World War.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg revealed in detail the costs of the health crisis at a press conference held yesterday and during which he presented an extraordinary budget update.

It is estimated that at the end of next financial year, Australia's public debt will reach a record $850 billion, mainly due to the additional debt of $184 billion that the government expects to incur over the next 11 months.

The unemployment rate is expected to continue to rise to 9.25% in December 2020, leading to the loss of jobs for another 240,000 Australians.

Despite the difficult economic and financial situation, Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told SBS that he remains positive and that the economic consequences of the pandemic could have been much worse.
