Each year, along with their compatriots around the world, Australia’s Italian community celebrates Festa della Repubblica – Italy’s national day.

It’s a time to recall an extraordinary moment in world history, when the Italian people took destiny into their own hands and forged a united modern republic.

This year Italian Australians won’t be able to celebrate with large gatherings, parades and festivals, due to our coronavirus restrictions.

Nevertheless, on this national day we honour the contributions of Italians to our country and the world. I know that the Italian community is playing its part supporting each other during this difficult time.

This year, we also acknowledge the tragic suffering and loss in so many countries from COVID-19. My deep condolences and thoughts are with our Italian friends this year.

Here in Australia we are also responding to this pandemic. We are all playing our part saving lives and livelihoods.

In time, the restrictions that are required of us will ease. When they do, we will rejoice in doing much of what we’ve had to put on hold: gathering together, reaching out for each other, and observing much-loved traditions that hold so much joy and meaning.

We will get there – and, in the meantime, I thank you for your patience and understanding.

I wish the Italian Australian community the best for the months to come, and thank you for all you give to Australia — this special place we call home.
