Melbourne is no longer the most liveable city in the world

For the very first time a European city has topped the rankings of the Economist Intelligence Unit annual global survey.

According to The Economist, Victoria's capital city is no longer the "queen" of livability.This time it has to make do with a second place, while the winner is Vienna.

Sydney on the other hand has risen in the ranking, breaking into the top five.


Every year 140 cities are ranked based on a range of factors, which include political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare.

3. Osaka, Japan

4. Calgary, Canada

5. Sydney, Australia

6. Vancouver, Canada

7. Tokyo, Japan

8. Toronto, Canada

9. Copenhagen, Denmark

2. Dhaka, Bangladesh

3. Lagos, Nigeria

4. Karachi, Pakistan

5. Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

6. Harare, Zimbabwe
