Every Australian citizen who is on the electoral roll can be called up for jury service. But what is involved if you are summoned to be a juror? And what are juries for?

Juries are an important part of the Australian legal system.
One of the things it is your civil obligation as an Australian citizen to do is to be on jury when you are called to do so, and people can be fined for not doing so.
Jury service allows members of the public to take an active role in the administration of justice.
When jurors are on duty, they are usually given instructions not to talk to anyone about the case or look up information online.

Jurors usually serve in trials that take between seven and 12 days, although more things involved - such as for suspected terrorists - can take months or even more than a year.
Judges are often asked about their availability in advance if they can be selected for very long trials.
