Australians generate 74 million tonnes of waste every year, of which only 60% is recycled, and the remainder is disposed of in landfills. Educating about recycling and following some of the simplest rules can make a difference.

Although, most Australians are aware of the importance of recycling, many are “confused” about what can and cannot be recycled.

Putting the wrong item in the recycling bin or bagging it can "contaminate" the rest of the recyclables, sending the entire waste to landfills.

Research has shown that many people put things in the recycling bin, even when they are not sure if they are recyclable. This is called “wish-cycling” and is one of the main contributors to contamination.
