Federal public servants have told a parliamentary committee it would likely take at least a decade for Australia to have a nuclear industry in operation.

Australia's nuclear future has been in the spotlight at the Special Committee on Nuclear Energy.

The Labour Party formed this committee to interrogate the opposition proposal with four members of the government.

The committee also includes one independent MP, one Liberal party member, and one National party member.

The political power struggle over energy is pitting the Coalition's nuclear plans with the federal government's renewable energy policy.
