New COVID variants can evade vaccine protections

The World Health Organisation says coronavirus cases have tripled across Europe recently, accounting for nearly half of all infections globally. Hospitalisation rates in the region have also doubled.

There has been a spike in COVID-19 cases globally in the last five weeks, even with testing levels dwindling.

The World Health Organization has suggested that the omicron BA.5 variant is causing a new wave of disease across Europe, saying repeated infections have the potential to lead to prolonged COVID-19.

The United Nations agency reported that 53 countries in the European region recorded nearly 3 million new coronavirus infections last week, saying the virus kills about 3,000 people every week.

It is recommended that adults over the age of five who have compromised immune systems should take a second booster dose. It is also recommended to wear a mask indoors and on public transport and to increase ventilation in confined spaces.
