India’s Ministry of External Affairs has begun the process of registering Indian students studying abroad, in order to compile data so that the government can help in hour of need.

"We have no data of Indian students studying abroad. We have therefore, started a Students Registration Module on madad.gov.in," Sushma Swaraj tweeted.
Students can register on government website where students are requested to enter their details like their address in India and abroad, emergency contact details and their course details.

This data collection will also help provide useful inputs about their pattern of migration globally, educational courses that they are registering in and related matters.

In coming days, Indian government is also likely to expand this initiative to include country specific advisories for Indian students; links to Facebook pages of Indian associations and Indian students associations; links carrying information on accredited educational institutions in various countries etc.
