A 7-year-old boy touring India with his family passed away in Mumbai on Saturday after suffering from a brain clot. Despite the tragedy, the boy's family ensured that his organs gave a new lease of life to four critically ill patients -- three of whom are minors.
Sydney resident, 7-year-old Deyaan Udani became the youngest organ donor in India when his heart, kidneys and liver were harvested after the doctors at a Mumbai hospital declared him brain dead.
Deyaan was touring India with his family when he suffered from a brain clot. He died at a Mumbai Hospital on Saturday.
The family, then decided to donate his organs to give a new lease of life to four critically ill patients – out of which three are kids. Deyaan's heart went to a two-and-half-year-old girl suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy.
Who is Deyaan Udani? 7-year-old Deyaan Udani studied at Quakers Hill Public School in Sydney. The Sydney based family was convinced of donating Deyaan’s organs after the little boy had learnt about organ donation in school. The little boy had conveyed his wish of donating his organs to his father. His mother – Mili, too has listed herself as an organ donor.
On the Last Day of their India trip, Deyaan complained of severe headache
The Udanis were touring India when on their last day (Jan 22) Deyaan complained of severe headache. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent a brain surgery.
According to local newspaper reports, "He kept sinking every day," said Dr Sucheta Desai, the transplant coordinator at the Hinduja Hospital adding that after the doctors declared his brain dead, the family was extremely supportive.
According to Deyaan’s mother - Mili, they decided to donate the organs because it was Deyaan's wish to do so. "Recently, Deyaan and his sister were taught about organ donation in school and how one can be listed as an organ donor on the driving licence. The kids came home and asked us if we were listed," Mili told Mumbai Mirror, adding that the children started to convince their father to get listed too. "At that time, Deyaan said that when he grows up, he would like to be an organ donor," she added.
